LOL Wut?

You have NO idea how this comment made me gaffaw, David!!!!!

I know you didn't mean it this way, but....over here, "cracker" is a word used by other races to racially insult someone of the Caucasian race. LOL  :tighthug:

Well, I learn something every day! We use it to mean many things - some is crackers - meaning mad or daft; a type of biscuit, and a short version of firecracker - something that goes off with a bang. It is from that last usage that saying something is a cracker means something really hits the spot. I've looked up your usage and it appears to have derived from whip cracking by slave owners.

With that in mind, I shall rephrase my praise: What a wonderful, imaginative evocation of a member of the feline race, an image that bursts like a firecracker in the mind! Is that better?

This is one of the unexpected (to me at least) spin-offs of DA - the variation in language even in the same tongue. I checked further in my Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (yes, I own books like that) and found 8 separate meanings, the last of which was something or someone that or who is exceptionally good. That meaning came into the language on our side of the Pond in early 20th century (these are the sorts of things that dictionary tells you).

Cheers

Humm interesting book to have. I think I may just invest in one myself!

Actually, I am quite aware of many sayings from your side of the pond. I've been a member of a forum (which sadly isn't as active now as it was once in the past, although it is still around) since 2007, and have made many friends from the UK. We have all been quite tickled at times to the many differences to the same words.... I love for instance, that you guys call a car's roof and trunk, 'bonnet' and 'boot'! Oh I just LOVE that! LOVE it! :D

I've never heard "cracker" explained however. But reading your reaction was the real intent on my end. You just crack me up so much sometimes David; a very interesting man as well!

Hi Linda - here's the link to the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary. ukcatalogue.oup.com/product/97… There is a CD-ROM version as well. The full dictionary covers about 50 volumes I think and is far too expensive to buy as an individual.

The "Shorter" gives a lot of etymology and has some links with usage in variants of English - like American usage. However, it is firmly rooted in English English. I may sound a bit odd, but I enjoy leafing through of a wet Sunday afternoon (we have a lot of those) and discovering new words and meanings.

"Boots and bonnets" - well, what can I say? Seems to me that "trunks and hoods" are just as odd

Cheers

David

Thank you for that link David! :)

And no, I don't find it odd at all that you enjoy doing that; increasing one's learning is fun! At least for me it is - and as long as it's enjoyable! :D
